Study Buddy Program Students from Torrey Pines High School and Canyon Crest Academy are matched with students from both Skyline and Solana Vista Elementary schools as well as 21 other schools around the region. There are many benefits for providing this type of mentoring. The elementary school students receive the benefits of extra attention, one on one time with an older teen, help with school work, an older youth’s “listening ear,” organized after school activities with peers, teens, and adult supervisors, and an opportunity to view the future (e.g., high school, college, and career pathways) from a successful teen model. Elementary school students learn the value of academics and to take academic studies seriously as they are tutored by the older teen mentors who have serious academic goals themselves. The teen mentors also benefit from the experience because it helps build self esteem, provides community service experience, and creates a sense of helping children. As part of the teen Study Buddy application process, the teen pledges to be alcohol, tobacco and drug free and to be an exemplary role model for children. This reinforces a community standard of high expectations for adolescents during a time when negative peer pressures can encourage poor choice making. Participation: The elementary school students are referred to the program by their teacher. The teens have an application that they fill out to be in the Study Buddy program.
